LETTER TO THE GOVERNOR
Prosecutor Explains How He Confronted
the Race Issue Head-On
| Passaic County Prosecutor Burrell Ives Humphreys
-- the man in charge of prosecuting Rubin Carter and John Artis
-- sent this letter to New Jersey Gov. Brendan Byrne a few weeks
after Carter and Artis were convicted of murder for the second
time. In the letter, Humphreys describes the lengths to which
he went to ensure that Carter and Artis got a fair trial -- including
keeping blacks on the jury against the advice of his assistants.

OF A RACIST CONSPIRACY? ] |
