Slater's Pond at lower right provided water to run the felt hat factory near the intersection (Slater's Mill). The dam broke in 1903.

Federal Hill Postcard

This old postcard above was found on ebay and appears to be from early in the 20th Century. The postmark has a partial date that appears to be 191_. It's difficult to tell whether the Pond is there. (It existed until the dam broke in 1903.) The postcard was printed in Germany. Click on thumbnails for big blowups.

FROM SPACE!

What does this have to do with anything? Who knows, but it sure is an amazing shot. Everything from Sparta to West Point, Highland Lakes to Brooklyn in one photo taken from 170 miles up in the Space Shuttle. And, of course, there's Federal Hill! Why do the mountains look redish? It was taken in the Fall.
