5 CHILDREN DROWN AT FEDERAL HILL

"Around 1901 two families lived along the north side of Hamburg Turnpike. Their houses were built on a narrow but long piece of land and the backs of the houses hung out over the lake* and had to be support by wooden posts. The 2 families were the Bonds and the Larrys. During the year 1901 2 girls and 1 boy from the Bond family and 2 girls from the Larry family drowned."

* At the time of the drownings the area was a lake, but it is now a river.
