THE FEDERAL HILL SERVICE STATION

I used to deliver Trends to Mrs. Carpenter here. On days when I would collect, I went into the door at left. As you walked in, there was a counter on the right and sweet, old Mrs. Carpenter would always offer me a piece of pie from an old-fashioned pie case on the countertop. The room was rather dark and the counter and walls were made of dark wood, as I recall. This picture is from the mid-1960s.

From my Riverdale School report on the History of Riverdale:

"In 1930, the mill on Hamburg Tpke. was converted into Federal Hill Service Station. The mill that was there made the finish for felt hats. The owner of the mill had the river dammed up so that the water could furnish power for the mill."

The dam-breaking flood occurred on Oct. 10, 1903. As of the 1960s, it was the largest flood ever recorded in the area. The Passaic River had a maximum flow of 37,300 cubic feet a second and it took 50 hours from the time the flood began until it reached maximum height, according to an old Paterson News.
