"Dr. Netter's contribution to the study of human anatomy is epochal. Dr. Netter has advanced our understanding of anatomy more than any other medical illustrator since the 16th century, when Vesalius introduced drawings based on cadaveric dissections. His illustrations depict not just the structure, but the functionality of organs in an animated, direct manner that is reminiscent of the work of Leonardo da Vinci." |
While still in medical school, Dr. DeBakey devised a pump that became one of the essential components of the heart-lung machine, which made open-heart surgery possible. He has developed more than 50 surgical instruments. Best known for his innovations in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, Dr. DeBakey received international attention in recent years for serving as consultant for Russian President Boris Yeltsin's heart bypass surgery. A pioneer in the development of the artificial heart, he was the first to use a heart pump successfully in a patient. The founding editor of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, his many honors include the Medal of Freedom with Distinction and the Presidential Medal of Science, for outstanding contributions to medical science. |
